“Be proactive, not reactive.”

That’s what my eldest sister’s been trying to hammer on me and my brothers for years.

I couldn’t help being reactive because my life is not a planner agenda.

It’s like a red scarf, weaved from yarn and wrapped around my giant neck. It’s looks like it will hold it’s own against the cold, and for a while it does until one yarn snaps and then another and another. The yarn begins to look more torn. With each use, a new hole pops up. You patch it up and it appears to be alright, but it will never be what it originally was. That’s okay. You still have a working scarf to wrap around your neck. You’re still warm.

That’s scarf is like my life this week.

Let’s set the scene to Monday morning.

I lay, face first, on the pillow until the alarm on my tablet rang. It was 8:00 a.m. I foolishly decided to go back to sleep.

“20 more minutes”, I thought.

I woke up a second time and realized that it was 8:30 a.m. Crap.

I quickly put on my clothes and ran to my work study job at the Campus Recreation Center.

I was twenty minutes late for everything that week.

I don’t know if this was a curse or a bad habit developing like at virus inside a computer.

In situations like this I have to be reactive. I believe it shows how adapted I could be.

But that’s not an excuse.

I have multiple projects that are on the works: Expansion of audio podcasts for Justin Reed, Developing a social presence for the Student Environmental Group at MTSU, and working on a podcast that I hope to launch next year. I also need to start working on scholarships before the end of the school year and also work on getting an internship for the spring semester.

See this type of stuff, I can plan out. But I still think that being able to solve the problem by adapting is a must for any career. Just don’t make it a bad habit, because soon or later, that scarf will break.



On another note, I am trying to break some of my habits by checking out a book called

The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg.

Unfortunately, someone already checked out the book so I’m getting the audiobook version, which is also good since I can listen to it while I’m walking to class.
